Collection Historical Note

Founded by Andrew Burgess in 1893 to manufacture guns using his patents and designs, the factory was located in Buffalo, New York. His company hired exhibition shooters such as Brad Barlett and family, and Charles Dammon. Burgess added Charles Loomis as partner in 1894. Burgess sold his company to Winchester in 1899.

Biographical Note

Born in New York state, Burgess initially began life as a photographer, before extending his wartime photography experience into the design and manufacture of more efficient and effective firearms.  In 1871 he married Eudora Tiffany, related to the Tiffany & Co. jewelry firm family.  He died December 19, 1908 at his home in St. Augustine, Florida.
