Abstract

This collection contains photographs of artwork by W. Langdon Kihn (1898-1957) of western Canadian Stony and Kootenay Indians drawn in 1922. These were published in 1923 in Marius Barbeau's book Indian Days in the Canadian Rockies (Toronto: McMillan Co. of Canada). The black and white photographs, some mounted on boards and one tinted, are evidenty images of Kihn' oiginal artwork, not the handsomely colored images as later published. As such these photographs by an unknown photographer contain some detail of line not visible in the book's printed images. It is possible that these pictures were in some way used in the publication of Barbeau' 1923 book, or of their later reprinting in Barbeau's 1960 Indian Days on the Western Prairies (Bulletin no. 163, Anthropological Series no. 46, National Museum of Canada) that contains interviews with several of the persons illustrated. Kihn studied under Winold Reiss for a time, and a 1928 catalog of a Reiss art exhibition is present. Also notable are a set of nine black and white prints of Native Americans that may have been used by Kihn as studies for his artwork. One image in particular (P212.2) shows a man wearing a feathered bonnet that may be the same headdress illustrated in Kihn's picture of Hector Crawler (P212.12). In the last folder of this collection are three photographs of illustrations by W. Leone Bracker (1885-1937) dating to 1931. These b & w prints of heroic western pioneers bear printer's notes on their backs, but to date it is unknown where they were published.
