Collection consists of 16 daily diaries and journals written by Stewart C. Darling. Diaries record daily chores and activities such as trapping in the Thorofare region of Yellowstone National Park, coal mining, ranching, and cutting wood.

Darling, Stewart

Stewart C. “Tex” Darling was born in Boston, Massachusetts, December 1, 1880. Intending to join the cavalry, Darling traveled to Texas in 1896 or 1897. Deciding not to join the military he signed onto a cattle drive for the Swan Land and Cattle Company destined for Toluca, Montana. 

In 1898 Darling traveled to Dawson, Creek, Alaska, in the gold rush; he arrived in Seattle, Washington, in 1900 to sell his gold. Over the course of his life lived in Cripple City, Alaska (1918-1919); Gebo, Wyoming (1919-1921); Valley, Wyoming (1924-1934); Ishawooa, Wyoming (1936-1941); and South Fork Route, Cody, Wyoming (1949-1957). Darling died in January of 1976 at age 96.
