Abstract

The Don Russell Collection consists of the papers, photographs, printed matter and objects created and collected by, or awarded to, Don Russell (1899-1986).  The subject matter is heavily concentrated on the American West, William F. Cody, and George A. Custer, with file folders on various other subjects included.  Printed material includes books, periodicals, pamphlets, dime novels, clippings and catalogues from book dealers and galleries.  The papers include correspondence and notes.

Collection Historical Note

Donald Russell (1899-1986)

Born in 1899, Russell edited the Chicago Daily News from 1923-1946, and the Chicago Tribune from 1946 to 1950.  He also worked on the editorial staff of the New Standard Encyclopedia from 1950 to 1953, and 1956 to 1957, working on the American Peoples Encylopedia from 1953 to 1956.  He is a noted author and historian specializing in the Old West, including Buffalo Bill Cody.  He was a founding member of the International Westerners, as well as authoring and editing multiple books in the Western subject area.  He died in 1986 at the age of 87.
