Abstract

These photographs were created by photographer Dr. Thomas Marquis, a physician and author, who lived on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation in the early 20th century.  The collection was divided into three sets prior to the purchase of the original negatives by the Buffalo Bill Memorial Association in 1999. The numbering system has been retained, based on image numbers within each of the three sets. The negatives were purchased from the Council for Indian Education. The collection consists of 462 nitrate negatives 2 ½ x 4 ¼ inches in size. Two (2) sets of prints have been furnished to the Council for Indian Education with permission for use in their publications.

Four Cheyenne elders:  left to right, Laban Little Wolf, Hairy Hand, Porcupine and Big Beaver, 1922.  As a young man Porcupine was an instigator of the wreck of a Union Pacific freight train near North Platte, Nebraska in 1867 and was later the “Messiah Preacher” who brought the ghost Dance to the Northern Cheyennes.

Custer battle veteran, Two Feathers, 1927.  Rifle taken by him from Custer soldiers, is a Springfield model 1873, breech-loader, single-shot.  Such weapons were kept hidden for many years - in some instances completely dismantled – because of government orders requiring Indians to surrender their firearms, and for fear of reprisals if they were discovered.  This and several other rifles were obtained by Dr. Marquis, who first won the confidence of their owners as agency doctor and friend of the red man.
