Abstract
Herbert Homer Hewes travel with his father Julius from Minneapolis, Minnesota to Rapid City, South Dakota (Dakota Territory) in search of gold in the Black Hills of the Dakota Territory during 1876. The diary and accompany documents further record their experiences during the journey, as well as their recollections of these events in 1927.

Herbert Homer Hewes (1858 or 1859 - Unknown),
Herbert Homer Hewes was born to Julius and Priscilla Hewes in Minnesota sometime during 1858 or 1859. The Hewes Family relocated from Maine sometime between 1850 and 1855. It was during the Gold Rush for the Black Hills during 1876 that Julius and Herbert Hewes along with a company of 34 men and boys in what was called the ' Hewes and Clark Expedition' traveled from Minneapolis to Sioux City to Crook City (Chamberlain) to Pierre to Rapid City. Most of the Hewes Family joined the men in Central City (Dakota Territory) by 1880.
