Abstract
Captain Peter M. Smith (March 25, 1828-May 18, 1923), was born in Green County, Pennsylvania, on March 25, 1828. In 1835, Smith moved to Iowa, and settled on the island south of LeClaire currently known as Smith’s Island. For many years he piloted the ferry boat from LeClaire to Port Byron. Smith married three times, his last wife being formerly Miss Ella Reed of LeClaire. (Information from obituary, Davenport Democrat and Leader, May 18, 1923, pg. 2)
